Why does the Amercian public never want to fight in a war?

Before Pearl Harbor happened and America got into WW2 the public didnt want to go fight. They felt like Hitler was the other half of the worlds problem. That is still how the public acts when ever we have to go to war. Some one said that All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. I agree.
