Mirena coil, help!?

Had mirena fitted on 4th may 2002 at my 6 week postnatal check its been fab and not had a period until today. I know this coil is supposed to be taken out/changed after 5 years, this is around now obviously. Does anyone know if having a period is a sign it is no longer effective or if i am at risk of getting pregnant?
