Did you know Andy Capp was British?

I've been reading the strip for years and it was only tonight that with the words quid and fiver did I noticed he spoke brit. I went searching Yahoo and found out through toonepedia(sp?) that he's always been british and I thought it was just a take on 1920s america (I know, your saying the americans always thinking the world revolves around them). Am I the only one who was in the dark about his origins or did I not read it enough?
